Statewide Rollout of Digital Drivers License Complete

Last month we told you the rollout of the new digital drivers license in Kentucky
was close to being done. Today, it's done, thanks to the hard work of the Transportation Cabinet, Kentucky State Police and Kentucky's County Clerks offices.

Since October, 250,000 digitized licenses have been distributed to Kentuckians either getting a new license, renewing their old license or coming in to replace lost or stolen ones.

What do people think? Citizens really seem to like it. According to Janice Marshall from the Franklin County Circuit Clerk's office, "...our customers are telling us the information is easier to find and to read and the color and clarity of the picture is much better. Merchants have even commented that the license is user friendly. I have taken several trips since receiving my digital license and the security personnel have been pleased with how easy the licenses are to read and how hard they should be to duplicate."

According to Steve Coffey from the Transportation Cabinet, "Law enforcement representatives are telling me they really like the Internet retrieval feature the digital license allows them to use. And we've heard from fraud experts nationwide who are telling us that Kentucky's new license is the best on the market. I've even had calls from many other states asking for technical information related to the 2D barcode feature embedded in the license. Kentucky was the first state to rollout that level of technology."

"With the advent of new technology, the digitized drivers license will allow our Troopers instant access to information through our ever-growing mobile data terminal (MDT) network," says Col. Linda Mayberry, Kentucky State Police Deputy Commissioner. "This expanding technology will provide both a quicker and safer environment for law enforcement personnel."
