What's The Number One Cyber Security Concern in the Commonwealth?
According to the
Governor's Office for Technology, the average state government worker
is the number one cyber security concern the Commonwealth faces each
day.
It's human error or lack of knowledge that causes more cyber security
problems in state government than any other concern. It beats out threats
posed by professional hackers, terrorists, and industrial spies. As
the old adage goes, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. By
raising their security awareness level, state workers can help ensure
that the Commonwealth's networks are kept safe and secure.
What can state
workers do?
- Create
strong passwords that contain alphanumeric and special
characters and are at least 8 characters long.
- Make
sure your computer has updated virus protection software installed
and that the virus signature files are current.
- Check
all external media for viruses before loading on your PC.
- If a
virus is detected, notify your system administrator immediately.
- Keep
your software updated by applying all fixes, patches, and services
for both your application and operating system software.
- Install
only approved software on your computer.
- Talk
to your LAN administrator to see if you need a firewall on your computer.
- Report
all suspicious security incidents to the Governor's Office for Technology's
Division of Security Services.
- Always
lock down your computer (CTRL+ALT+DEL then select LOCK COMPUTER) before
stepping away from your desk.
- Shut
down your workstation before leaving for the day.
- Always
wear your security badge and never allow access to the building
to strangers.
- Do not
forward chain letters.
There are numerous
security incidents that are reported to GOT every day. The number one
violation is the misuse of resources such as clogging up the email system
by forwarding chain letters or surfing inappropriate Websites.
