Since its start in 1994, the Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP), an effort of Kentucky's Department of Education, has seen tremendous growth in student participation. STLP is a project-based learning program that empowers students in all grade levels to use technology in and out of the classroom. It was established by the STLP State Advisory Council which is composed of teachers, students and community leaders. Today, over 27,000 students from over 1,100 schools are involved. According to Elaine Harrison, STLP Coordinator, "It is the goal of STLP to be established in every school in Kentucky and empowering students to use technology every day!" The program just completed 9 regional technology showcases at Western Kentucky University, Murray State University, Eastern Kentucky University, Georgetown College, Morehead State University, and the University of Kentucky. Students from across the state demonstrated technology skills to judges and some were selected to present and work at the upcoming Kentucky Teaching and Learning Conference in March. Topics for the showcase were focused on hardware and software use, such as Finale, Microsoft Office, digital cameras, and more. Student projects spanned web page development, help desks and various project-based learning centered around instruction in the classroom and helping the community learn about technology.
Student-designed projects fall into four categoriesinstructional, community, technical, and entrepreneurialand are created to help the school and community while also meeting STLP goals. Some activities qualify as service-learning projects and provide assistance to charities or other local agencies in need. Other activities can be described as entrepreneurial, and illustrate the beginning steps of forming a small business. The program is open to ALL students (P-16) in Kentucky. Any
person wishing to help judge or attend the showcases next fall can e-mail
