Council Adds to the Commonwealth's Basemap July 1, 2003 At
the June meeting of the Kentucky Geographic Information Advisory Council
a proposal was unanimously endored to add six new layers to the Commonwealth's
digital basemap: Geographic Names, Census, Addresses, Structures, Parcels
and Land Cover. The 12 layers of the Commonwealth Map are:
The Commonwealth Map will be a twelve layer statewide digital basemap available free via the Internet for interactive mapping and geographic data querying and downloading. As a collaborative effort of local, state, and federal partners, this initiative is designed to facilitate public, non-profit, and private sector geographic information systems (GIS) development, utilization, innovation, and data sharing. The Commonwealth Map will serve as Kentuckys contribution to the United States Geological Survey's (USGS) National Map. The National Map provides public access to high-quality, geospatial data and information from multiple partners to help inform decision making by resource managers and the public.
