Back in October of last year, Techlines told you about a Commonwealth funded project in Jefferson County to help bridge the digital divide (see article). The digital divide is a phrase used to describe the gap between those who can afford and have access to the latest technology and those who do not. The project ultimately awarded two Jefferson County groups $125,000 each to fund projects that brought technology training and computer hardware to those who need it most. One project called e-Village-Louisville, developed by Jefferson Technical College in partnership with the Housing Authority of Louisville and the McConnell Technology and Training Center, has been a huge success! Of the 69 adults who began the program, 56 completed their computer training course. An overwhelming number of participants expressed a strong interest in continued training. Almost 75% of beginning students stated that they were eager to enroll in A+ certification classes that will be Phase II of the eVillage-Louisville program. Project Manager
Donna Miller with Jefferson Technical College said, "I cannot begin
to say what a tremendous accomplishment an 82% completion rate represents.
The response for continued instruction was overwhelming. All of the
members of one of our classes expressed a strong interest in continuing
from basic computer training to enrolling in college courses to continue
their education. This project is an incredible example of leveraging
partnership resources. The Housing Authority of Louisville, McConnell
Technology Training Center, the Governor's Office for Technology and
Jefferson Technical College all bring their collective strengths to
the table to create a banquet for program participants. Consequently,
we ALL win many times over and program participants can move closer
to self-sufficiency." |
