Huge Hit! Exploring Kentucky's Geography Online

During February of 2003, the Kentucky Geography Network (KGN) website had over 250,000 hits, a substantial increase from December, 2002. The website is a "one-stop-shop" for geographic data resources related to the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It includes a powerful geographic explorer to locate maps and geographic data content for a particular part of the state or to search based on keyword or theme type.

Why the growth?
The Kentucky Geography Network is a good example of a website that lets users interact with technology, not just read about it. Visitors to the site chose to use the Metadata Explorer (a geographic lookup tool) nearly 73,000 times in February. The most popular sites were the Kentucky Geologic
Survey's Oil and Gas mapping service and the Water Resources Information System's Kentucky Incorporated Cities mapping service.

In all, over 140,000 files were delivered to users from the site during the month of February. Since its inception in April of 2002 over 140 databases, interactive maps, and historic map images have been contributed to the Kentucky Geography Network by a variety of publishers.
