and Engineering Fair

April 17, 2002

FRANKFORT, KY-- Twenty-seven Kentucky students will join more than 1,200 promising young scientists from across the world next month at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Louisville, Gov. Paul Patton announced today. “The 2002 Intel/ISEF will bring the world’s best young scientific minds to Kentucky,” said Patton. “The students on Team Kentucky 2002 will give our citizens a sense of pride in the state’s scientific community. I’m impressed by their breadth of knowledge, and it’s gratifying to see such a large homegrown contingent.”

Patton spoke at a news conference Wednesday at the Capitol, where members of the team, science educators and University of Louisville representatives shared their excitement about the upcoming event. “In attracting some of the country’s best researchers to our campus, we have heightened our ability to do research that grows economic development and improves the quality of life in Kentucky,” said University of Louisville Acting President Carol Garrison. The university, one of many Kentucky higher education institutions offering scholarships to science fair winners, is offering 30 full-tuition scholarships with a total value of nearly $1 million.

The students’ projects cover medicine, health, biochemistry, environmental sciences and other areas. Examples of projects include:

  • Digital Electroencephalograph: Recording and Analysis
  • Motivation in 6th-12th Grade Students
  • The Effect of Microgravity on Combustion
  • Effects of Livestock and Crops on Water Treatment

The Intel/ISEF is set for May 12-18 in Louisville. It is the world’s largest pre-college science fair, with more than 1,200 of the world’s most promising young scientists expected to attend. Students from all 50 states and 40 countries around the world will compete for honors in 14 scientific categories and a team project category. More than 900 awards will be presented, including scholarships, cash awards, computers, lab equipment, summer internships and scientific field trips.

The Commonwealth of Kentucky, which also hosted the event in 1997, is the
first state government to serve as a presenting sponsor.
