Commonwealth
Celebrates National GIS Day
November
7, 2003
Think how
far we've come from the foldout, paper maps of yesterday. No longer
are maps an outdated snapshot of a rapidly changing world. Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) let us reflect the world as it changes
around us, allowing us to keep information current and easily
accessible.
The Commonwealth of Kentucky is working in many areas of GIS -
from mapping underground mine locations to avoid accidents - to
taking digital snapshot of the landscape to detect change - to
creating a twelve layer statewide digital basemap available free
via the Internet for interactive mapping and geographic data querying
and downloading.
The best way
to see all of the amazing GIS projects and applications the Commonwealth
is working on in one place is to come to the Capitol Annex in
Frankfort, November
17 - 21. In celebration of National GIS Day, state agencies will
be displaying maps and posters in the tunnel between the Capitol
and Capitol Annex to raise awareness of the many productive uses
of GIS technology by talented people in Kentucky. The
poster display is being coordinated by the Governor's Office for
Technology, the Office of Geographic Information (OGI) and the
Geographic Information Advisory Council (GIAC).
