Find Your Favorite Kentucky Hunting and
Fishing Spots Online
September
3, 2003
Just
about the only thing the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife
Resources (KDFWR) can't do for you these days is the hunting and
fishing itself. It seems like every month they're adding a new
online tool to their Website
to make outdoor adventures in Kentucky more convenient.
Now the department's Fish and Wildlife Information System Office
(KFWIS), in cooperation with the Kentucky Infrastructure Authority
(KIA), has launched a new mapping tool to help pinpoint fishing
and hunting spots in the state.
The
site allows you to search a map of Kentucky for all public hunting
and fishing locations and zoom in on specific locations to find
out exactly what the area has in store. For fishing, the map includes
the locations for boat ramps, bank fishing access for streams
and lakes, plus information on parking, ramp fees, lodging and
picnic areas. For hunters, the wildlife management areas are listed
with a description of the area, the size and how to get there.

Visitors to
the site can select visible and active layers of information and
then identify what information lies below the layer.
What other
features may be added to the site in the future? According to
Dave Frederick, Geoprocessing Specialist at the Department of
Fish and Wildlife, "As we move forward, we can envision including
information on current water conditions from the US Army Corp
of Engineers for lakes in Kentucky, allowing a visitor to do a
radius search to find fishing and hunting access locations within
a certain distance of their home, even adding information on what
types of fish a lake has and what's biting today. The possibilities
are endless for using digital mapping technology to enhance information
finding."
